IWEP meeting Iranian colleagues

From 18 to 20 July this year, IWEP delegation was on a business trip to the Islamic Republic of Iran, where a number of meetings took place with the leading representatives of the expert community of Iran.

The visit took place within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2016 between IWEP and the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS) under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Note: IPIS is the key "think-tank" of Iran, which operates under the Foreign Ministry of the country and provides foreign policy department of the Islamic Republic of Iran with analytical forecasts.

On Wednesday, July 19, in the first half of the day, the round table on "Prospects of Kazakhstan-Iranian relations in the context of development of transport corridors" was held at the Institute for Political and International Studies under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Iran.

During the round table, the Iranian side was represented by Dr. Seyed Rasoul Mousavi, Adviser to the Iranian Foreign Minister, M. Pakparvar, Director of IPSI Group of Central Asian and Caucasian Studies, H. Soleimanpour, Professor of the School of International Relations of Iran. Representatives of other Iranian analytical institutions and Kazakhstan Embassy in Iran also took part in the round table.

IWEP Director Yerzhan Saltybaev gave a speech at the round table outlining the prospects for bilateral cooperation between Kazakhstan and Iran in the field of transport communications. Among others, the following points were made:

- prospects of increasing the volume of trade along the Kazakhstan-Turkmenistan-Iran transport corridor. Reverse fill rate of containers. It was stressed that the new agreements on the use of this corridor achieved with the Iranian side would allow Kazakhstan to maintain the Kazakhstan SREB route as a priority.

- opportunities for cooperation in agriculture. The ways of increasing the sales volumes of Kazakhstan grain and other products of the agro-industrial complex of the RK to the Iranian market have been considered;

- further cooperation in the SCO format and deepening cooperation with Iran.

After a business lunch with the IPIS directorship, a meeting with the Director of the CIS Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Bagheri, took place. During the meeting, topical issues of cooperation between the two countries were discussed.

On the same day, a roundtable at the Institute for Iranian and Eurasian Studies (IIES) was held. An exchange of views on a wide range of issues of cooperation between our countries took place. In particular, the Iranian side, represented by IIES Deputy Director Davud Kiani, placed the issues of cooperation between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Islamic Republic of Iran in the field of agriculture and transport on the agenda.

In general, the Iranian experts put high hopes on the expansion of ties between the business communities of the two countries, the creation of the conditions for investment cooperation, and promotion of public diplomacy. In this regard, an oral agreement was reached on organizing a closer dialogue between the think-tanks of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Islamic Republic of Iran, within the scope of the Astana club discussion platform among others.
